Parenting and Family Literacy Centres

The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board operates a Parenting and Family Literacy Centre at Holy Family Catholic School with the support of the Ministry of Education.

The Parenting and Family Literacy Centres:
  • Are open to parents, grandparents and caregivers of children from birth to 6 years of age;
  • Provide play-based activities within a school setting to help prepare children to learn upon entry in kindergarten;
  • Are free of charge;
  • Offer a family literacy program that develops early literacy and numeracy skills to prepare children for school;
  • Help increase parents’ knowledge, involvement and comfort level with schools;
  • Provide opportunities for optimal child development through positive parent-child interaction;
  • Assist in the early identification of children with special needs;
  • Help children transition more easily into kindergarten by allowing Centre staff and kindergarten teachers to work together.

The Centres are free of charge and are open to parents, grandparents and caregivers of children from birth to 6 years of age. Each Centre provides play-based activities within a school setting. These activities help prepare children for school and offers parents an opportunity to learn ways to support their children in their learning journey.

Frontenac PS 38 Cowdy Street 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Polson Park PS 165 Robert Wallace Drive 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Rideau Heights PS 77 MacCauley Street 8:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
Holy Family Catholic School 114 Wiley Street 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Parenting and Family Literacy Centres

Do I have to stay with my child at the Centre?
Yes, every child who attends a Centre needs to be accompanied by an adult.

Do I need to register to attend?
No, pre-registration is not required. However, you will be asked to sign in.

Is there any cost to attend the program?
No, access to the program is free of charge.

Can I come more than once per week?
Yes, the Centres are open Monday to Friday and families are free to use the Centres as many times as they choose during hours of operation.

Do I have to bring a snack?
No, a nutritious snack will be provided for your child during the program. You are welcome to bring your lunch to the program if you plan on staying for the lunch hour. Please ask the Parent Facilitator at the Centre for details on food safety policies at the school.
